Matt Scholl - Partner

Matt Scholl is a Founder of and Partner at TrueNorth Health Ventures, a strategic advisory firm that works with emerging growth and enterprise clients across the broader healthcare ecosystem. Matt is also a general partner at Lemhi Ventures (no longer making new capital allocations).  Matt was previously part of Google’s life sciences arm Verily, where he led a number of business development efforts as part of the Onduo virtual clinic business. Earlier in his career, Matt served as head of corporate and business development at RedBrick Health.  RedBrick was a pioneer in aligning incentives and rewards to healthy behavior change.  Matt has extensive experience in healthcare startup growth, including business development, sales, channel partnerships, growth strategy and investment banking.


Matt’s healthcare investment banking career began as part of the Health & Wellness (H&W) team at TripleTree, a successful boutique firm in Minneapolis (now part of Capital One). Matt led the research effort in H&W and facilitated capital acquisition and M&A engagements for companies.


Matt has an MBA in Entrepreneurship from San Diego State University and a BA and MEd in psychology and counseling from the University of San Diego. He currently serves on the board of directors of Mendota Health, a mobile wound care business.


John Park - Partner

John brings a unique blend of corporate healthcare and startup experience to TrueNorth and earlier in his career was a co-founder with Kyle Rolfing at Definity Health.  


John most recently served as the VP of Strategic Business Development and Chief Transformation Officer for Stella Diversified.  John joined Stella (parent organization to BCBS MN) in 2019, bringing more than 25 years of experience inside both startups and large corporations focused on strategy development, innovation, business development and corporate venture. 


Prior to joining Stella, John was managing director at Echo Health Ventures in Durham, North Carolina, a collaboration in corporate venture capital between BCBS NC and Cambia.  John was responsible for building and leading the market development and advisory functions for EHV and successfully led the execution of 16 contracts between the parent and portfolio companies. 

Park has also held leadership, strategy and innovation positions at Alegeus Technologies, Ceridian, Cigna,  and Fidelity Investments. 


John earned his undergraduate and master’s degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. 


Kristin Austrum - Consultant

Kristin Austrum serves as a consultant at TrueNorth Health Ventures, bringing deep expertise in healthcare product strategy, go-to-market execution, and operational leadership. She is a recognized solutions leader across the healthcare continuum.


Kristin shares a long, collaborative history with the TrueNorth team. Her relationship with the partners began during her tenure in Product Development at Definity Health (2000–2004), a pioneering company founded by Tony Miller. She further cemented her ties as a Co-Founder, VP Product Development and Operations for RedBrick Health (2006–2010), where she worked alongside TrueNorth’s Kyle Rolfing and Matt Scholl.


Kristin’s professional experience is marked by consistent leadership in transforming healthcare businesses. This includes serving as Chief Product Officer at Reemo Health (2019–2022) and holding key roles in product strategy at large enterprises like UnitedHealth Group, where she was Director Product Development, Consumer Driven Health Care (2004–2006). Early in her career, she also gained foundational experience in benefits consulting, including roles as an Employee Benefits Consultant at Marsh & McLennan and a Healthcare Consultant at Watson Wyatt.


Kristin holds a degree from Drake University. Her deep domain knowledge, entrepreneurial track record, and shared history with TrueNorth’s leadership make her an essential strategic asset.

Kyle Rolfing - Senior Advisor

Kyle’s track record as an early-stage healthcare entrepreneur and executive is significant.  Kyle’s most recent exit, Bright Healthcare, is Minnesota’s all-time largest IPO - resulting in an enterprise value in the billions.  In addition to Bright, Kyle was a founder and CEO of RedBrick Health, which was acquired by Virgin Pulse. 


Prior to co-founding RedBrick Health, Kyle co-founded and was CEO of Definity Health, and was also a member of UnitedHealth Group’s Executive Leadership Team. Before Definity, Kyle held leadership roles at Aetna and Hewitt Associates. 


Kyle has served as an investor, board of director and mentor to numerous other successful companies including Zipnosis, Wellbeats, Learn to Live, among others. 


Kyle earned his M.B.A. from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, and is a Certified Employee Benefit Specialist from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Cris Ross - Senior Advisor

Cris Ross brings over three decades of leadership spanning healthcare, technology, and government to TrueNorth Health Ventures. He is best known for his transformative tenure as the Chief Information Officer at Mayo Clinic from 2012 to November 2024. During his decade-plus at the helm, Cris spearheaded the health system’s complex, $1.5 billion enterprise-wide Epic EHR migration, significantly expanded its virtual care services, and established foundational AI and data collaborations with Google and Microsoft.


In addition to his advisory role at TrueNorth, Cris is highly active in the health tech venture space, serving as a Venture Partner at Aegis Ventures and a Senior Advisor to Insight Partners. Before his time at Mayo Clinic, he held prominent executive leadership roles including CIO for CVSHealth/MinuteClinic, CIO for Optum Behavioral Health, and Executive Vice President for Interoperability at Surescripts. He also served as the chair of the board for the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) from 2019 to 2024.


Beyond his executive pedigree, Cris provides invaluable perspective as a two-time cancer survivor and a dedicated patient advocate. He currently serves on the board of CaringBridge and is the co-author of the 2024 book Diagnosed: An Insider’s Guide for Your Healthcare Journey, which explores the complexities of navigating the medical system from the unique dual perspective of a premier hospital executive and a patient.


Cris holds a B.S. in Economics from the University of Minnesota and an MBA from the Yale School of Management.

Tony Miller - Strategic Advisor

Tony Miller serves as a Strategic Advisor to TrueNorth Health Ventures. Tony and the TrueNorth team share a history spanning nearly 30 years, dating back to when Tony was the founding CEO of Definity Health, a pioneer in healthcare consumerism. A serial entrepreneur, Tony is responsible for some of the most tremendous healthcare business innovations over the last several decades.


Currently, Tony is the CEO of Harbor Health, a multi-specialty payvider based in Austin, TX. At Harbor, he is pursuing his vision of connecting quality care to a cutting-edge payment mechanism, continuing his passion for putting decision-making and power in the hands of the consumer.


Prior to Harbor Health, Tony founded and was CEO of Bind Benefits, where he pioneered personalized health plans and created a new category of health insurance. Bind was sold to UnitedHealth Group in 2021. In 2006, Tony founded Lemhi Ventures and led the formation and development of its portfolio companies, including Carol Corp. Carol worked with providers, health plans, and employers to develop a value-based payment system and was eventually acquired by Optum.


After starting his career at United Healthcare, Tony joined Deloitte Consulting where he focused on strategic business development, mergers and acquisitions, and performance turnarounds in the managed care industry.


Tony holds an MBA from Cornell University’s Johnson Graduate School of Management, an MS in Kinesiology from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, and an undergraduate degree from St. Olaf College. He currently serves as a Director of Harbor Health and Aegle Health Capital, and previously served on the boards of ABILITY Network, PlanSource, Recondo Technology, Sandlot Solutions, and Shareable Ink.

Dr. Peter Mills - Clinical Advisor

Dr. Peter Mills serves as a Clinical Advisor to TrueNorth Health Ventures. Peter and TrueNorth Partner Matt Scholl began their professional collaboration 20 years ago when Matt served as the investment banker for Vielife. Subsequently, Peter assisted Matt and Kyle Rolfing in building the foundational clinical underpinnings for RedBrick Health.


Peter is a physician who graduated from medical school in London in 1990 and is on the UK General Medical Council’s specialist register. For the past thirty years, he has combined direct patient care responsibilities at a hospital in North London with commercial Chief Medical Officer roles.


His commercial experience spans start-up health tech organizations in Europe and the USA, and more recently, he served as Cigna International's European Medical Director. Peter is recognized as an expert in the field of population health management and has published widely in the scientific literature on the subject.

John Harper IV - Analyst

John is a Strategy and Business Development Analyst at TrueNorth Health Ventures, where he brings experience in healthcare operations, data strategy, and cross-functional problem-solving.


Prior to joining TrueNorth, John spent over seven years at NeueHealth (formerly Bright Health), supporting platform and data integration, clinical program implementation, and value based care partnerships.


John is currently an MBA candidate at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management and holds a B.A. in Political Economy from the University of Southern California.
